Darkstalkers/Red Earth: Maleficarum, originally released as Capcom Selection: Maleficarum (カプコン・セレクション マレフィカールム, Kapukon Serekushon Marefikārumu) and also known as Ops Maleficarum and Maleficarum: Ops Villa (マレフィカールム -Ops Villa-), is a 200 page black and white Japanese comic book anthology written and illustrated by Mami Itou, who is also known for her work on ROBOT, Pilgrim Jägar and Super Street Fighter II X Gaiden. The manga focuses on Capcom's Darkstalkers series (Vampire in Japan) as well as Red Earth (Warzard in Japan).
Publication history[]
Collecting stories printed irregularly in the magazine Comic Gamest, the volume was originally released in Japan on November of 1997 (cover date 1997-12-10) and published by Shinseisha as Capcom Selection: Maleficarum.
With the bankruptcy of Shinseisha in 1999, no new edition was available until Itou, with her circle Hikari no Okyu, released a dojinshi version of the manga under the title Ops Maleficarum on 2007-03-31.
In the US, on 2010-11-09, Udon Entertainment released an English version of the manga as Darkstalkers / Red Earth: Maleficarum.
For the 20th anniversary of the Darkstalkers series, Japanese publisher Wani Books secured the rights to officially re-release the manga in Japan under its Gum Comics Plus label on 2015-06-25 under the name Maleficarum: Ops Villa, keeping the original material plus adding two never-before compiled short comics based on Capcom's Star Gladiator series.
Udon Entertainment statement[]
- Written and drawn by Mami Itou (ROBOT, Pilgrim Jäger) Maleficarum is video game manga at its best. This standalone volume includes five short stories from across the monstrous Darkstalkers universe, as well as a four-chapter tale featuring the swords & sorcery world of Red Earth. You’ll see succubus Morrigan fight the wolfman Talbain, the devilish Jedah confront vampire lord Demitri, the heroic lion-man Leo questing to cure his cursed body, and several more fantastic tales. Also included are gag strips and artist commentary.
